ARTICLE- A Messianic Passover Seder

Many of you are aware that at Maple Street we had planned on Maundy Thursday (April 9) to do a Messianic Passover Seder.  This is a service we had done for 19 years at the Avondale Church, at the behest of Messianic Jews (Jews who believe that Yeshua, Jesus the Messiah has come) who showed and encouraged us.

Since we are unable to do a Messianic Passover Seder together this year, I have scoured the internet for the closest to what we would have been doing, and I welcome you to join in:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PIBRvqQ6H6E

This Seder uses a different program (Haggadah) than we have; almost all of the elements are the same, but this one takes a bit over an hour (not counting the meal), with much singing.

  • When we do it, our program would take about 45 minutes, without singing (the first year)

Here, a reader reads the blessings in English and people sing the Hebrew words

  • When we do it, I would read the Hebrew words and we would say the English translation together.

Notable parts of the order:

51:54  Dinner is served

55:58  Where the leader says, “Eat the afikomen,” Jesus said, “This is My body given for you”

57:17  “This cup is the new covenant in My blood”

LUKE 22:14-20 (NIV)

14When the hour came, Jesus and His apostles reclined at the table.
15And He said to them,
“I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.
16For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.”

17After taking the cup, He gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you.
18For I tell you I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”

19And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”
20In the same way, after the supper He took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is poured out for you.”

A PLAYLIST for EASTER CAROLS of the RESURRECTION
Though we claim that every Sunday is a celebration of the Resurrection, many of us have a limited arsenal of Easter carols.  So here is a list, hurriedly compiled Easter morning.  The "contemporary" (I put it in quotes because some of these are almost as old as me) versions I have pulled one of many youtube versions so you can click the link if you aren't sure you know it.  And I would love to hear some that have inspired you:

from the hymnals

UMH 364   Because He Lives
UMH 302   Christ the Lord is Risen Today
UMH 327   Crown Him with Many Crowns
UMH 177   He is Lord
UMH 310   He Lives
UMH 314   In the Garden
TFWS 2088    Lord, I Lift Your Name on High
UMH 303   The Day of Resurrection
UMH 322   Up from the Grave He Arose
and a Lenten hymn with an optional Easter verse:
UMH 288    Were You There
(TFWS=The Faith We Sing, UMH=United Methodist Hymnal)

Another hymn recommended by readers is
"I Know that My Redeemer Lives."  A version of this was included in the old Methodist hymnal, to the tune of UMH 318.  This is not included in the recent hymnals, but several versions with the original words can be found here, here, and here, and there are many others with different lyrics altogether.
